What Just Happened?

As you may or not have noticed, I haven’t been quite as active writing the last few weeks. Things come up and lo and behold, I missed a few weeks of writing.
Anyway, let’s look back at the last few weeks in WWE and see what I need to address:
  • Enzo Amore and Big Cass reminded us why we are so attached to wrestling. The lovable tag team never fails to captivate an audience. They instantly win crowds over with their charm and in-ring talent. That very same magic is what made Enzo’s concussion at Payback so tragic (that rhymed). After ricocheting his head off the ring while being bounced off the ropes, Enzo had to be taken out of the building on a stretcher. Enzo appears to be recovered now. This unfortunate injury ended up being an unexpected showcase for Big Cass. For a few weeks he took center stage and showed that he has what it takes be a star. He has held his own in confrontations with the Dudley Boyz and Chris Jericho. Look out for big things from the 7-footer one day in the near future.
  • The Golden Truth has finally debuted as a tag team and….I don’t know if I should finish this sentence. This is a mystifying duo I am secretly rooting for. They’ve been losing every match and their momentum has been awkwardly inconsistent to say the least. I think I’ve wasted your’s and my time by even writing this much. Moving on…
  • When did Paige become the Dolph Ziggler of the Women’s Division? She can put on a great match like it’s nothing, but you better believe she’ll lose 90% of the time. She is still only 23 and is already a 2x Women’s Champion. She hasn’t hit her literal prime yet, but is she past her WWE-prime? I think she should be a prime contender in the Women’s Division. It’s going to be tough though with even the likes of Dana Brooke defeating her clean. Things get murky when you account for women who haven’t been super-pushed yet, like Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and perhaps Bayley if she gets called up to WWE.
  • The Miz vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn vs. Cesaro from Extreme Rules is the best match of the year so far in WWE.
  • It’s great to see the US Title back on Rusev, where it rightly belongs. For me, him and Cena have been the premiere US Champions of the last few years. Speaking of which…
  • Duh-duh-duh-duhhhhhh-duh-duh-duh-duhhhhhhhhhh! John’s Cena’s back, JACK! And if he has any say (which he does) he’ll probably yank that US Title away from Rusev.
  • Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles at Extreme Rules was just ok for me. I preferred their clash at Payback, which I would rank as one of the best matches of the year. My biggest fault with this match was that Roman was made to look too strong. I consider myself a fan of his and I was rooting for him to win here. But at what cost? You don’t need to kill the power of Styles Clash in the process. Reigns took Styles’ finisher a handful of times in this one, including on a chair. You better believe Roman kicked out each time. Let’s get this straight. AJ barely ever uses Styles Clash. Finally they let him do it a bunch of times on Roman Reigns and Reigns kicks out each time. C’mon guys.
  • Charlotte deserves to have her hat thrown in the ring as one of the top heels working in wrestling today. Dana Brooke controversially and unexpectedly helped Charlotte defend her title at Payback when she posed as Ric Flair. The next night on Raw Charlotte did the unthinkable; she turned on her father, Ric, who was responsible for countless Charlotte victories. She called her father out for not being there for her as a child. The feud is now bending the worlds of reality and kayfabe. Wrestling at its best.
  • SETH ROLLINS IS BACK! OMG! AHAHHHHHAHAHAHHHHHH! Okay now everything is back to normal. Props to WWE for keeping him a heel. I think everybody was expecting a face turn since he was coming back from an injury. I like him in this role. Keep him as that slimy, smarmy, opportunistic snake. Hopefully he isn’t quickly fed to the phenomenon that is #ReingsWinsLOL.
  • The Brand Split is back? Well it seems semi-official at this point. SmackDown will be aired live on USA starting on July 19. The draft is estimated to be taking place the week before. We still don’t know which titles are going where, if there will be a world champion on each show, or who will run each show, etc. This one is still a work in progress.
  • AJ Styles just wrapped up his feud with Roman Reigns and could not pick up the WWE WHC. He’s no longer allied with The Club. He won’t be participating in Money in the Bank either after losing to Kevin Owens on Raw. Who knows where he goes from here. Maybe Finn Balor gets called up to WWE and they duke it out.
  • Finally, on a sad note, our defending Money in the Bank winner, Sheamus, will not be competing in the spectacle this year after falling to defeat against Sami Zayn on Raw:(
